The Minnesota Council on Economic Education offers an "Economic Systems"
class to help high school educators prepare students to meet state academic standards
in economics. It is open to teachers who have not attended a course by this title
in the past six years.
The course includes a review of basic economic concepts, use of materials to
augment interactive learning, and an examination of assessment techniques. Educators
will receive instructional materials that include lessons listing concepts, objectives,
procedures, and suggested assessment methods. Content areas to be addressed include
micro, macro, and international economics.
During the academic year two follow-up Saturday meetings will be scheduled.
A classroom observation may occur, with the consent of the classroom educator.
There is a $50 refundable deposit required to register for this two-credit graduate class. The free credits from the University of Minnesota will be granted upon completion of course requirements.
The course meets 8:00 - 4:00 daily. Participants will receive curriculum materials, lunch and morning refreshments.
A $100 stipend will be paid for the week-long course, plus $20 for each follow-up Saturday during the academic year.
Eighteen travel stipends of $215 are available for those living outside the 7-county metropolitan area with $35 travel stipends for each follow-up Saturday session. Class enrollment is limited to 30.
This project is funded by the Federal Improving Teacher Quality Program of
the No Child Left Behind Act administered by the Minnesota Office of Higher Education.
