2017 Econ Challenge Winners

Mounds View High School, Cloquet Senior High, and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Take Top Titles at Economics Challenge State Championship

St. Paul, MN – April 13, 2017 – Mounds View High School, Cloquet Senior High, and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial High School took the state champion titles in their divisions, Adam Smith (advanced placement), David Ricardo (large school), and Joan Robinson (small school), respectively, at the statewide Economics Challenge on March 29 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Mounds View High School took first place for the third year in a row, while Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial won for the second year in a row. Cloquet Senior High last won the state title in 2015.

Second place teams were Edina High School, Adam Smith division, Foley High School, David Ricardo division, and Albany Area Senior High, Joan Robinson division. 19 teams from 16 schools competed in this year’s state competition. Over 290 students from across Minnesota competed in the 2017 competition, which included regional competitions and an online competition before the state competition.

In addition to team prizes, Michael Pak, Abhishek Vijayakumar, and David Zheng of Mounds View High School won the 1st place individual award in the Adam Smith division for individual scores and were named 2017 “Economics Students of the Year”. David Zheng also took the Economics Student of the Year title in 2016.

Levi Peterson of Cloquet Senior High and Brayden Swanson of Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial High School won the 1st place individual awards in their divisions as well.

Mounds View High School and Cloquet Senior High will advance to the National Semi-Finals on April 25 for a chance to compete at the National Economics Challenge in New York City in May. Eight different Minnesota high schools have reached the final four at the national level, more than any other state. Minnesota students have placed in the top four at the national finals 18 times over the last 16 years, and have placed in the top two more than any other state. In 2016 Mounds View High School placed 2nd in the National Challenge and in 2015 they took 1st place.

Economics Challenge is held by the Minnesota Council on Economic Education and is sponsored by The Mosaic Company and Think Mutual Bank, and is hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. The competition provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their economic knowledge.
