2018 Econ Challenge State Champions

Edina High School, Parnassus Preparatory School, and Albany Area Senior High Take Top Titles at Minnesota Economics Challenge

St. Paul, MN – April 13, 2018 – Edina High School, Parnassus Preparatory School, and Albany Area Senior High took the state championship titles in their divisions, Adam Smith (advanced placement), David Ricardo (large school), and Joan Robinson (small school), respectively at the state Economics Challenge on April 11 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. It was the first state win for Edina High School since 2002, the first win ever for Parnassus Preparatory School, and the first state win for Albany Area Senior High since 2014.

Second place teams were defending 2017 state and national champions Mounds View High School, Adam Smith division, defending 2017 state champions Cloquet Senior High, David Ricardo division, and Barnesville High School, Joan Robinson division. 75 students in 19 teams from 18 schools competed in this year's state competition. More than 250 students statewide competed in the 2018 competition, which included regional and online competitions before the state competition.

Michael Pak of Mounds View High School was named Economics Student of the Year for receiving the highest individual score at the competition.

Edina High School and Parnassus Preparatory School will advance to the national semi-finals on April 24 for a chance to compete at the National Economics Challenge in New York City in May. Eight different Minnesota high schools have reached the final four at the national level, more than any other state. Minnesota students have placed in the top four at the national competition 19 times in the competition's 17 year history, including taking first place in the Adam Smith division in 2017 and 2015.

Economics Challenge began in 1986. In 2001, the competition became a national program with more than 10,000 students competing across the country in the National Economics Challenge. Minnesota’s Economics Challenge is supported by the Mosaic Company, Piper Jaffray & Co., and Think Mutual Bank with the state championship hosted at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. The National Economics Challenge is sponsored by the Council for Economic Education.
