In Your Classroom

Open to all MN grade 6-12 students, gauge student learning and engagement with economic and personal finance topics used in class by having them produce a music video (using the music from a popular song) with lyrics rewritten to be about one of the below concepts. Submissions should be on one of the following concepts or otherwise approved by MCEE:

Students' work can be used to evaluate comprehension and serve as a formative or summative assessment of student learning in the classroom.

Competition Rules

  • Teachers may enter as many submissions as they like (no more than one per student/team), no more than 5 student projects will be recognized.

  • Students of chosen videos will be recognized on a suitable digital platform and receive a $50 cash prize (per video/team); checks will be mailed to the teachers school address.

  • Teachers of chosen student videos will be recognized on a suitable digital platform and receive a $100 cash prize (maximum of one cash prize per teacher); checks will be mailed to the teachers school address.

  • All entries must be uploaded to YouTube no later than the final date of the competition and include the hashtags #BringingEconomicstoLife and #Econ&Art in the video description on YouTube.

  • YouTube link and full video must be emailed to Angela Zappa no later than the final date of the competition if not submitted in registration form; azappa@umn.edu.

  • The video must be on one of the approved topics from the Minnesota Council on Economic Education (MCEE) glossary of terms or use a different concept approved by MCEE in advance of the competition.

  • All entries must have the concept listed within the title of the music video.

  • Teachers must complete the online registration form prior to student submissions.

  • Students may work together on teams to produce a video for submission; no student shall be in more than 1 submission.

  • Video length should not exceed 5 minutes and must be filmed horizontally.

  • All videos must include music, unless clearly an acapella video.

  • Lyrics must be embedded in the video as subtitles.

  • All entries become the property of MCEE and may be used for publicity purposes.

  • Brand names and trademarks are not allowed.

  • Song lyrics and video must be school appropriate (no offensive language, images, etc).

  1. Complete the 'Registration & Submission Form' linked below (December 1, 2022 - April 30, 2023).

  2. Completed entries should be uploaded to YouTube and include the hashtags #BringingEconomicstoLife and #Econ&Art in the video description on YouTube.

  3. Completed entries YouTube link and full video must be emailed to Angela Zappa no later than the final date of the competition if not submitted in registration form; azappa@umn.edu.
