Application Questions

1. Who is eligible to attend College Dollars & Sense
 Any student in the Twin Cities metro area (defined as Minneapolis, St. Paul, and first ring suburbs) currently in grades 9-11 is eligible to apply for the program. Priority will be given to those who are (a) the first in their family to attend college, (b) are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, or (c) are students of color.

2. Does it cost anything to attend College Dollars & Sense?
No, there is no cost to apply or attend. Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. Each participant will receive a $25 metro transit pass for the week to help offset the cost of public transportation to and from the University. Any costs incurred over the $25 are the responsibility of the participant. We cannot replace lost or forgotten metro transit passes.

3. What does 'full participation' in College Dollars & Sense mean? 
Full participation includes attendance Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m (breakfast starts at 8:30) to 3:30 p.m. No exceptions.

4. What do I need to do to apply? 
Applications include student and parent contact information, student GPA and school information, student demographic information, and two short essay questions.

5. Why do I need a teacher or counselor contact at my school to apply?
In order to make sure that students receive all communications, we require a teacher, college & career counselor, guidance counselor, or other school staff to be listed as a contact on the application. This staff member will be included on all communication to the student and parent and will help facilitate the application and acceptance process. If you are homeschooled, you may leave this section blank (or put NA on the online application).

6. How should I fill out the application? 
Apply online through Google Form or download and print an application. If printed, please use a pen and print clearly and legibly. Incomplete applications will not be considered. 

7. Where do I send my completed application?

Online applications are automatically submitted through Google Forms.

8. When are applications due? 
Applications are due April 1, 2018. Early applications are encouraged! 

9. When will I learn if I am accepted or not?
We will review your application once it is received in our office, and notify you of your acceptance into the program by the end of April. After a participant is accepted, they will need to submit a permission slip and medical emergency form from their parents/guardians.

Program Questions

1. Where does College Dollars & Sense take place?
College Dollars & Sense will take place at the University of Minnesota.

2. Will there be any homework? 
No.

3. What does a typical day at College Dollars & Sense look like?
A typical day will begin with a morning of lessons on personal finance taught by different engaging and knowledgeable instructors. Lessons will include hands-on and group activities. Participants will also explore the University of Minnesota and visit a local company, as well as listen to guest speakers from the local business community.

4. Am I responsible for getting to the University myself? 
Yes. Each participant will receive a $25 metro transit pass for the week to help offset the cost of public transportation to and from the University. Any costs incurred over the $25 are the responsibility of the participant.

6. Do I need to bring my own food to College Dollars & Sense
No! Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. If you have any dietary restrictions, please contact us at mcee@umn.edu.

7. Can I stay at the University overnight during College Dollars & Sense
No, there is no housing available at the University. You will arrive each morning and leave each afternoon.

8. Am I allowed to leave early? 
No, full participation is required at College Dollars & Sense.
